Decker's parents relocated to Louisiana in the early 1990s. Decker won a regional talent competition with a rendition from Patsy's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart at the age of just nine years old. Decker was able to move to Georgia at the age of fifteen. Then, in August of 2009 Decker launched her self-titled debut album under the name Jessie James. Jessie James had a moderately popular debut album. Wanted, a song from the album reached the Top 40 singles chart. Following two singles from the album stiffed Decker struggled with the label's management to have more control of her music. her subsequent single Boys in the Summer was intended to be a more traditional release. Decker's sophomore album, which was announced under the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and, after the release of three singles did poorly in the country charts Decker was removed from her contract.
